Conquering CHD’s Co-founder Returns as Executive Director

“I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”

After nearly a year away, Amy Basken returns as executive director for Conquering CHD. While evaluating the next steps after the departure of former executive director Mark Fried, Basken acknowledges that it is a natural fit for her to step into this role. In a message, Basken says she’s privileged to return and is excited to work with the team to lead the organization forward.

Basken is a founding member of Conquering CHD. She has more than 15 years of experience effectively designing advocacy resources, like national policy to direct patient education around issues like federal research and funding, life-long care, patient engagement, and outcomes reporting. Her passion, creativity, and drive have supported CHD patients and families and empowered them to be their own self-advocates.

“In our first decade, we have developed important resources and tools for patients and families coping with congenital heart disease,” said Basken as she encourages the public to follow Conquering CHD in its journey to create visibility and empower all impacted by CHD.

After graduating with a Masters of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Amy worked as a clinical speech pathologist for 10 years. When her third child was born with congenital heart disease, she and many others needed a community.

Amy left Conquering CHD in May of 2022 to attend to her son following a catastrophic accident. His miraculous recovery has enabled Amy to return to work and she can’t imagine doing anything else! When Amy is not walking alongside CHD patients and families, she spends time at her busy home with her husband, her adult children, and their furry buddies. You can also find her singing, knitting, and exploring the great outdoors.
