Patient Story- Christopher Orozco
Christopher Orozco’s journey began on August 6, 2021, when he entered the world full of hope and love, though his story would soon take an unexpected turn. At birth, he was small, which led to a car seat test being ordered to ensure his safety. That test revealed an irregular heart rate, prompting a more in-depth evaluation.
An echocardiogram revealed the heart condition that would define much of his early life: severe congenital heart defects. He was transferred to a children’s hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, where his diagnoses were confirmed—Coarctation of the aorta, a hypoplastic aortic valve, a large VSD (ventricular septal defect), and an ASD (atrial septal defect). At just 20 days old, Christopher underwent his first heart surgery, a complex procedure to patch the VSD, repair the ASD, resect the LVOT muscle, and reconstruct his aortic arch. The surgery was a success, and Christopher began to thrive, although complications arose.
One of the risks of his surgery was the paralysis of his left vocal cord, which meant that Christopher would need a G-tube to safely drink milk. But once he had the G-tube in place, he was able to go home and begin his journey toward healing. At home, Christopher defied every expectation. With the support of physical therapy and occupational therapy through ECI (Early Childhood Intervention), he slowly and steadily reached milestones. He was crawling, getting into everything, and bringing joy to everyone around him, especially his siblings, Michael and Brianna. Christopher was a bright light in their lives, and his infectious smile and determined spirit made him a constant source of happiness, even in the face of ongoing medical appointments.
At 15 months, Christopher needed another heart surgery. His aortic valve had begun thickening, requiring intervention to prevent further complications. The surgery went well, and his recovery was nothing short of miraculous. He was home in just three days, and once again, he amazed everyone with his resilience and courage. Christopher’s heart condition never stopped him from living life to the fullest. He loved swimming, playing with his siblings, exploring his toys, and spending time with his dog. He had a special love for his plants, often sneaking a little extra attention to the ones his mom tended to. Above all, Christopher cherished the time spent with his family, whether it was in moments of play or quiet time with his parents, Cristian and I. But in late March 2023, something changed. Christopher had a seizure-like episode that sent us rushing to the hospital, and from there, he was transferred to his main children’s hospital in Fort Worth.
After countless tests, doctors confirmed that it wasn’t a seizure, but an aneurysm in his LVOT (left ventricular outflow tract). Two days later, he underwent surgery in hopes of removing it, but complications arose. The surgery was unsuccessful, and Christopher was placed on ECMO (a heart-lung bypass machine). The next day, doctors discovered that his coronary artery had become pinched. This discovery led to yet another surgery, marking his fifth open-heart surgery in his short life. At this point, Christopher’s condition became critical, and despite all efforts, it was clear that we had reached a point where more surgery was doing more harm than good.
On April 2, 2023, Christopher passed away, leaving a hole in our hearts that words cannot express. He fought tirelessly through every surgery, every setback, and every challenge his heart condition presented. He was a true heart warrior, never letting his condition define him. His courage, joy, and spirit were beyond measure, and he inspired everyone who knew him to keep fighting, no matter the odds.
Christopher’s presence in our home was a gift. His smile could light up any room, and his spirit brought a warmth we didn’t even know we were missing. Even after all he endured, he always seemed to bring light and love wherever he went. His passing has left an irreplaceable void, but we find comfort in knowing that he is now free from pain, rejoicing in heaven with a healthy heart, surrounded by peace and love. Cristian, his siblings, and I miss him terribly. His absence is felt deeply in our hearts, but we know that his legacy will live on, not only in the memories we hold but in the hearts of everyone who was touched by his light. Christopher may no longer be with us physically, but his spirit, his courage, and his love will remain with us forever.
