Addison Gutierrez

The Warrior Heart Project
Hi my name is Addison Gutierrez! On June 21, 2008 my mom went in for a routine ultrasound. She had low amniotic fluid which meant that she had to have an emergency C section. My dad was a surgery resident at the hospital so he was able to meet her there. I was born at 35 weeks with the lungs of a 28 week old and blue because of my lack of oxygen. They had to take me away quickly.
To my parents’ surprise, they found I was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). It had been missed on my ultrasound. My parents were heartbroken. Both being in the medical field they knew the severity. I was rushed to the cath lab for emergency surgery. Two weeks later when my lungs were strong enough, I had open heart surgery and my arterial switch. I left the hospital weighing less than 5 pounds.
Multiple appointments and occupational therapy kept my mom busy the first year. Now I thank God everyday that I am healthy and just turned 16! I still have my yearly cardiology appointments which are cool to go to since I get to see how I’ve changed and how my heart is. Thanks to my amazing surgeon and doctors I am able to live a normal life and do all of my favorite things like cheerleading, baking, and theatre!

I know that some kids with CHD are not as fortunate as I have been. For this reason I have created the Warrior heart project. I believe no child or parent should have to go through the struggles and fears with CHD. If you are interested in learning more you can follow my project on Instagram! I make bracelets to sell and donate all of the money to Conquering CHD. I have already raised almost $1000 in half a year. If you are interested in buying a bracelet please email me and I will send them to you! They are just $3!
My email is addisonrose21@icloud.com if you are interested! We have all different colors and they are great for anyone! Many people have already bought and are wearing the bracelets to bring awareness to CHD. I have been blessed to have my entire family supporting me and my project! They are always helping me and always telling people about my project . I hope this is the start of something amazing as I want this project to really change people’s lives and really make a difference in the heart community! My experience with CHD and this project has also inspired me to want to become a doctor in the future. I want to help others like how my doctors helped me.
